Pivot’s first product, Proteus, focused on automated metal grinding — a physically demanding and hazardous process traditionally performed by skilled workers. Its combination of vision models, sensors and industrial robot arms enables the system to adapt to different parts without extensive reprogramming.

Pivot began deploying its software across more than 10 robots at a large cast-iron foundry, where the production environment included over 200 different parts a year — exactly the kind of high-mix manufacturing that conventional fixed automation finds difficult to handle.

The larger opportunity goes beyond automating metal grinding. Pivot’s vision is to give industrial robot arms the perception and hand-eye coordination needed to handle increasingly varied tasks — making intelligent automation viable for manufacturers that traditional robotics has struggled to serve.
